Mary Graham of CT 0089 Middletown joined TOPS in 1995, nine years after her husband passed away. By then, both of her daughters were married and living on their own. A friend on her bowling team was a TOPS member and often shared stories about the wonderful people in her group. “She was always talking about all the good times they had and what a nice group of people they all were,” Mary said. “She invited me to a meeting, which I accepted.” When she attended her first meeting, she immediately understood what her friend meant. “I was so impressed! They greeted me with open arms.”
When Mary joined TOPS, she had just 10 pounds to lose, but she also had a lot of inner feelings to overcome, which she did. Mary became a Weight Recorder for her chapter, loving the chance to meet members at the scale each week and encourage them along the way. Mary received the Chapter Angel recognition for two consecutive years, an award honoring members who go above and beyond to help others.
Jan Fuller, Mary’s chapter Facilitator, says her kindness makes a difference, especially when members are struggling. “Even when you have a gain, she has a way of making you feel at peace with it,” Jan said. “She is such an inspiration to all of us.”
Mary began gaining weight again and realized she needed to get back on track by reconnecting with TOPS’ programs. She found portion control particularly helpful and reached her goal, and then eventually accepted encouragement from her Facilitator to become a KOPS.
“It was the most fantastic step forward!” she said. “I’m honored, and that’s what keeps me motivated!” Mary was 94 years old when she took that step, showing that it’s never too late to reach a goal.
Her resilience inspires Jan, who says thinking of her helps her find motivation when she feels discouraged. “Whenever I am down or want to give up, I only have to think of her, and my motivation is back. How could I possibly complain at my age when Mary never complains?” Jan said.
The everyday kindness Mary shares helps make her chapter feel special. Jan describes Mary as someone who gives heartfelt hugs and sends cards and notes that help others feel important and worthy.
For Mary, that sense of belonging is at the heart of TOPS. “They treat everyone the same when you join. All are valued and respected!” she said. “They make you feel ‘SPECIAL!’”
