Recognized for her creative cooking and fitness demonstrations, thoughtful health research and the enthusiasm and encouragement she brings to her chapter each week, Mary Bodendein, TOPS WI 1573 Middleton, is the June TOPS Member of the Month.

Mary joined TOPS in the summer of 2021, when meetings were still being held outdoors during COVID. After participating in other weight-loss programs over the years, she was searching for something more personal and meaningful.

Rather than focusing only on the number on the scale, Mary said her group has helped her develop a healthier mindset and a better understanding of nutrition. She appreciates that members are free to find approaches that work best for their individual lifestyles, whether that includes exercise, medication, different meal plans or learning healthier cooking habits.

Mary especially values the friendships she has built through her chapter. Her chapter is even starting a walking group together, and continually shows up for each other during difficult times. When Mary’s husband was seriously ill, fellow members sent cards, dropped off gifts and offered support in ways she will never forget.

“It’s uplifting to have the other members hear me out, and I hear them out, and I feel very, very connected to the TOPS group that I’m in,” said Mary.

A former fitness instructor, Mary is known within the chapter for heading to her local library to research health and wellness topics and sharing what she learns with others. She has organized educational presentations on osteoporosis, arthritis, muscle loss and GLP-1 medications, along with demonstrations using kettlebells, resistance bands and weights to help members feel more comfortable exercising at home.

She also enjoys teaching practical, healthy cooking ideas that feel approachable for everyday life. From easy sheet pan dinners to simple air fryer recipes, Mary focuses on meals that are quick, affordable and realistic for individuals or families. Her goal is to help others feel confident in preparing healthy foods without complicated instructions or expensive ingredients.

“Mary is the positive person in the group who shares her journey, asks people for advice and truly cares about others and helps them when they have questions,” said chapter Facilitator Sandra Witte. “She is a gem to have as a member of our group — kind, attentive, informative, sharing, deep concern for everyone and always willing to help!”
