When life stress began to take a toll, Vanessa Pumphrey, TOPS NL 5294 McKays, recommitted to her health journey, losing 25 pounds with TOPS and setting an example for both her students and fellow members.

Vanessa decided to join TOPS after trying weight loss programs that didn’t stick, and was encouraged by her mother and sister, who are both members. But after stepping into a last-minute role as school principal, Vanessa could no longer attend TOPS meetings.

“It came to the point where I couldn’t walk up the stairs at work, and as principal, I was always in pictures, and I couldn’t even recognize myself,” said Vanessa. “It’s the old saying that you have to have a balance — you have to take care of yourself first in order to work properly.”

After seeing the toll on her health, she chose not to renew her contract as principal and returned to teaching. She rejoined TOPS in August, and by December, she had lost 25 pounds.

“I just love the meetings because the people there are so supportive,” said Vanessa. “It just gives you accountability rather than trying all these (other weight-loss) programs, where if you mess up, you aren’t really held accountable.”

Vanessa tracks her food to monitor her eating and stay hydrated. Her mother, also a TOPS member, provides motivation, and the K-12 students at her school inspired her to recommit to her health journey.

As people began noticing her weight loss and asking how she did it, Vanessa started spreading the word. When she saw an opening for a TOPS Field Staff position, she decided to take on the role of District Coordinator and Advocate, which helped her stay even more committed to her health journey.

Vanessa is now teaching while pursuing her master’s degree and plans to eventually return to school administration.

She shares this advice with other members: Show up for yourself, attend TOPS meetings and remember that you deserve it.

“After losing 25 pounds, I can now walk up the stairs,” she said. “I notice a difference in how my body feels physically. As you age, your health becomes the most important thing.”
