Diana Miller, TOPS MO 0331 Independence, has been inspiring members since joining in 2012. She became a KOPS in 2015 and remains a steady, encouraging presence — serving as Weight Recorder, motivator and friend.
After her husband’s passing, Diana sought friendship and motivation to improve her health. She found both in her chapter, building lasting relationships her chapter calls TFF — “TOPS Friends Forever,” courtesy of member Sharon Zeller. Her chapter’s motto, “The Greatest Wealth Is Health,” reflects that spirit of support and appears on their T-shirts worn at State Recognition Days.
For nearly 12 years as Weight Recorder, Diana has learned that “knowledge is power.” She encourages members not to fear the scale, but to value its accountability, offering cheers, hugs and comfort during weigh-ins.
“[Becoming KOPS] takes time, takes patience and most of all, it takes good friends to be there to encourage you, in the highs and the lows,” Diana said.
After moving farther away, Diana began making the 30-minute drive each week to attend meetings. During COVID, she opened her garage to members, setting up lawn chairs so they could all gather. Those meetings became the highlight of the week.
“We’ve joined a sisterhood — TFF, TOPS Friends Forever,” she said. “They’re the ones who bring you back every week … the ones you share your concerns and lifestyle changes with.”
Diana believes staying busy, socializing and eating healthy are key to her success. She also finds joy in volunteering, dedicating more than 1,000 hours to an organization that
provides temporary housing, education and resources to those experiencing homelessness.
If she has a gain, Diana makes her go-to meal: homemade vegetable beef soup with whatever vegetables she has on hand. Her advice is simple — show up, support one another and keep a smile on your face.
“Diana often says, ‘Never give up and always believe in yourself!’” said fellow member Hazel Ann Barkie-Cox. “Her faith is strong, and she reminds us to ‘take the first few steps, even when we can’t see the whole staircase.'"
